At the August 6, 2018 Common Council meeting, Mayor Vandersteen presented Finance Director Nancy Buss with the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award received for the 2018 City of Sheboygan Annual Program Budget. The GFOA is a major professional association servicing the needs of appointed and elected local, state and provincial-level government officials and other finance practitioners. Sheboygan is one of 19 municipalities in Wisconsin to receive this award.
The GFOA Distinguished Budget Presentation Award represents a significant achievement for the City of Sheboygan. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. In order to receive the budget award, the city had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well the city’s budget serves as:
- A policy document
- A financial plan
- An operations guide
- A communication device
In order to receive this award, the city must publish a budget document that meets program criteria. Creation of the entire budget document and the achievement of this award would not have been possible without countless hours of work from city staff and in particular Finance Director/Treasurer Nancy Buss. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. This award is valid for a one year period. City staff has already begun work on the 2019 Annual Program Budget with hopes to keep the award winning trend going.
