Sheboygan, Wisconsin – December 17, 2024 – On October 31, The City of Sheboygan learned of a potential issue with our network. In an abundance of caution, we isolated our IT network and immediately engaged cybersecurity experts to conduct a thorough forensic review to understand the full scope of the incident.
On November 22, we learned that unauthorized users have named the City of Sheboygan in a post and shared a screenshot displaying a list of file archives. As of this date, cyber security experts are still investigating the full extent of the unauthorized access.
Throughout the course of the investigation, cyber security experts and the City’s IT staff have identified significant upgrades required for the network to reduce risk in the future. Resolution 129-24-25 authorizing the IT Department to purchase these necessary upgrades was approved by Council at the December 16, 2024, Common Council meeting. The City continues to monitor the situation closely, working with cyber security specialists to safeguard its systems and to ensure the integrity of its network. The City would like to thank its employees, residents and partners for their continued patience and understanding during this time.
